Melania Trump enjoys nature-themed Japan cultural experience

First lady Melania Trump has had a nature-oriented Japanese cultural experience at Akasaka Palace, where she learned that bamboo trunks can create music and also serve as flower vases. Mrs. Trump and Japanese first lady Akie Abe were entertained Monday by tunes from a “shakuhachi” bamboo flute, played by flutist Yosuke Irie, with a set of bamboo trunks standing upright like a screen behind him. The bamboo installation then turned into a set of vases as flower artist Kumiko Kato build a sculpture out of it while the flutist played background music that included “Amazing Grace.” Mrs. Trump also learned how to summon carp at a pond: She clapped her hands, and the fish raced to her. Trying to lose weight? Here are the worst foods to eat if you’re on a diet

If you’re trying to lose weight, some foods are obviously more helpful in your efforts than others. The following are among the worst foods to eat if you’re trying to lose weight: Any type of sugar “There are roughly 250 different names for sugar, and ALL of them are lousy for us,” said certified eating psychology counselor Margaret Schwenke, owner of Authentic Nourishment. “Sugar causes the body to store fat, wreaking havoc on metabolism and weight-loss efforts.” Processed meats Processed meats are usually red meats that have been preserved by smoking, curing or salting. They include bacon, salami, sausage and bologna, and they’re often high in fat and sodium. “The World Health Organization recently categorized processed meats as carcinogenic,” Schwenke said. Desserts Desserts don’t have to be abandoned completely, but if you’re eating them often (and after a full meal) you could be adding a significant number of calories to your diet. Be selecti...

How Democrats Are, and Aren’t, Challenging the Trump Economic Record

Ask Democratic candidates for president how they would challenge President Trump’s boasts about the economy, and the initial response tends to be less an attack than a concession. “The overall numbers about G.D.P. or the stock market are great,” said Elizabeth Warren after a town hall here last week, before discussing long-term wage stagnation and health care costs. “Yes, we are at a moment of stability, and we’re at this moment of expansion,” said Amy Klobuchar at an economy-themed talk at Dartmouth, before saying that made it a good time to address inequality and climate change. “So Donald Trump is elected in the last two years — and I will confess, even he couldn’t screw up the momentum,” said Michael Bennet on “Meet the Press,” before mentioning housing, health care and higher education costs. This speaks to the fundamental challenge that the eventual Democratic nominee is likely to face next year: an economy that is easily the strongest in two decades, with an...

David Carr’s Daughter On The ‘Grand Caper’ Of Life, And The Grief Of Loss

When New York Times media columnist David Carr died suddenly of previously undiagnosed lung cancer in 2015, he left behind a legacy as a journalist, a mentor and a father. “He was so good at inspiring confidence in you,” daughter Erin Lee Carr says. “He had an ability to spot talent in a way that I’ve seen sort of unrivaled — whether it be Ta-Nehisi Coates or Lena Dunham or his colleague A.O. Scott at the Times.” But David Carr’s role as a mentor to his daughter was complicated by his addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine. His 2008 memoir, The Night of the Gun, describes how, earlier in his life, he put Erin and her twin sister Meagan into foster care before eventually getting sober. In the memoir All That You Leave Behind, Erin, now a documentary filmmaker, writes about how her father’s past affected her life, and how she dealt with her own addiction to alcohol. She sees her book as a continuation of her father’s spirit. “He talked about life being a grand caper a...

Dogs quarantined after officials detect a vicious disease. Humans could be at risk, too.

A small-dog commercial breeding facility in Marion County, Iowa, is the source of “multiple cases” of a canine disease that can be transmitted to humans, the state’s agriculture department said. Canine brucellosis is highly contagious among dogs and may cause catastrophic reproductive issues in the animals, including infertility, stillbirths and spontaneous abortions, according to the Iowa Department of Health. Health officials in Iowa have issued quarantines for facilities containing the exposed dogs as they undergo clinical testing. State Veterinarian Jeff Kaisand on Friday issued a statement confirming multiple cases of the disease in dogs in central Iowa. While it is rarely reported in humans, canine brucellosis is zoonotic — meaning it can infect people through contaminated blood, urine, milk or other reproductive fluids. A human infected with the disease may experience flu-like symptoms: fever, sweats, joint pain, weakness and headaches, according to the Iowa ...
